Safer opioid supply: Spotlight on the vital role of pharmacists in harm reduction programs (March 2, 2022)

Watch Full Webinar

The opioid crisis is an ongoing and devastating issue across Canada, and pharmacists have a vital role to play in reducing the harm associated with drug and substance use to individuals, families and communities. A safer opioid supply (SOS) program is one type of harm reduction strategy that supports people who use drugs by providing access to regulated substances from a legal source rather than toxic versions from illicit markets, thereby minimizing risks of overdose and death. This webinar begins with a live discussion with the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Mental Health & Addictions and Associate Minister of Health, on the federal government's approach to harm reduction and the important role that pharmacists play in supporting people who use drugs. Following the Minister's remarks, our panel of experts examined and discuss SOS and other harm reduction strategies, explored issues around stigma and equity of access, and focused on the pharmacist’s role as an advocate for patients with addiction.
