Environmental sustainability & climate resilience

Minor Common ailments icon

Climate change is one of the greatest threats facing global health, with impacts already evident across Canada through rising temperatures, extreme weather events and increasing natural disasters. The health-care industry is responsible for nearly 5% of Canada’s total greenhouse gas emissions, with medication-related emissions accounting for almost 25% of that total.

Environmental changes are also contributing to more frequent and severe disruptions to health systems, including reduced access to medications, interruptions in continuity of care and the displacement of patients and communities.

Pharmacists play a critical role in responding to these challenges—supporting emergency prescribing and dispensing, guiding patients during disruptions and collaborating with health system partners. They are also well-positioned to act as environmental stewards by promoting sustainable practices, reducing the environmental impact of care and supporting patient and community resilience.

Integrating sustainable practices with emergency preparedness helps strengthen climate resilience and ensures continuity of care during times of environmental and system stress.

Check your local public health units for detailed and location specific health and safety information.

Effective emergency and disaster management preparedness and response plans for pharmacy professionals should be tailored to your specific province and professional judgement. Regular training, drills and collaboration with local pharmacies, regulatory colleges and health-care organizations are essential for this to occur.
