Across Canada, pharmacists are playing a growing role in supporting patients with their contraceptive care as prescribing authority and public coverage continue to evolve.

To mark World Contraception Day, CPhA has updated its Access to contraception in pharmacies across Canada chart.

The updated chart provides a national snapshot of pharmacists’ contraception prescribing and administration authority, along with public coverage for contraceptive services and products across Canada.

Manitoba latest to expand pharmacists’ role in contraception care

Pharmacists’ role in improving access to contraception continues to grow across Canada. In recent years, Newfoundland and Labrador, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island have all expanded pharmacists’ authority to prescribe hormonal contraception. In August 2026, Manitoba became the ninth—and latest—province to do so. Pharmacists in the province who complete approved training can now assess, prescribe and administer eligible contraceptives.
