Webinar 1: Recognizing Obesity as a Chronic Disease (.75 CEU)

Tuesday, Oct 20, 2026 6:15-7:00 p.m. ET

This session establishes the foundation for chronic weight management by reframing obesity as a chronic and relapsing disease and explores why pharmacists are well positioned to identify patients who may benefit from discussion, assessment, and referral. Participants will explore underlying biology of obesity, factors driving weight regulation and how obesity presents in everyday pharmacy interactions and how to introduce the topic respectfully and appropriately.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Explain obesity as a chronic, relapsing disease that warrants timely treatment and describe the biological mechanisms influencing weight regulation.
  2. Identify obesity-related health risks and common comorbidities encountered in community pharmacy practice.
  3. Recognize pharmacy-based touchpoints where weight management discussions may be appropriate.
  4. Assess patient readiness and identify verbal and non-verbal cues that may indicate openness to a conversation about weight management.
  5. Select appropriate, patient-centred approaches for introducing obesity care within routine pharmacy encounters.
