Bill S-4: PIPEDA

On March 24, CPhA appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology to discuss Bill S-4, an Act to amend the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). CPhA has a longstanding history of advocating on issues related to the privacy of health information. CPhA is expressing its support for the bill, particularly the clause in which an individual’s personal information may be obtained without consent for the purposes of communicating with the next of kin or authorized representative of an injured, ill or deceased individual, and the clause that requires organizations who encounter a privacy breach to report these breaches to the Commissioner of Privacy in the event that the breach creates a risk of harm to the individual.
