New drug shortage resource: Oral phenytoin
There is an ongoing shortage of oral phenytoin products in Canada, including 100mg capsules and 50mg chewable tablets. CPhA, the Canadian Society of Healthcare-Systems Pharmacy (CSHP) and medSask have developed a clinical resource to support pharmacists and other health-care professionals in managing this shortage.

New on CPhA Learning: Lab Tests
Ordering, Monitoring and Interpreting Laboratory Tests to Optimize Medication Management is now available on CPhA Learning. This new multi-module program (15 CEUs) provides pharmacists with the knowledge and skills to use laboratory results to support medication management, including when to order tests, how to interpret results and how lab values inform drug therapy decisions. Enrolment fees apply.

Updated acne content in CPS
The Acne chapter in CPS Full Access has been updated with evidence-based, practical guidance, including enhanced information on patient assessment, differential diagnosis, monitoring and treatment options, along with new considerations for diverse skin types and individuals undergoing gender-affirming therapy.

CPhA supports Canada Health Act policy advancing equitable access to care
On April 1, CPhA released a statement welcoming the Canada Health Act Services Policy as an critical step in reinforcing the important principle that medically necessary services should be publicly covered regardless of which qualified health professional provides them.

IPPC Indigenous Pharmacy Scholarship: What you need to know
The 2026-2027 application process for the IPPC Indigenous Pharmacy Scholarship is now open! Developed to support Indigenous representation in pharmacy programs, this scholarship is open to First Nations, Métis and Inuit individuals entering or enrolled in post-secondary pharmacy education programs. Deadline to apply is June 22.

Health Canada releases Critical and Vulnerable Drug List
Health Canada has released a new list identifying drugs most critical to patient care and vulnerable to shortages—an approach long recommended by CPhA to support more proactive planning and prevention. The list is intended to help prioritize system-wide efforts to strengthen supply chain resilience and better anticipate disruptions.
