Content updates
Major updates
The following content has been extensively updated and reviewed by 2 external peer reviewers:
- Acute Rhinosinusitis (sinusitis): Added new discussion on differentiating viral vs bacterial infection, plus talking points to use when patients request antibiotics, and a link to Public Health Ontario’s infographic on use of antibiotics for sinusitis; added new drug table showing all drugs used for supportive/symptomatic care (e.g., analgesics, decongestants); added new figure illustrating the sinus cavities; aligns with Choosing Wisely Canada’s Ten tests and treatments to question in pediatric otolaryngology, which has been added to the Suggested Readings.
- Dressings: Aligns with new 2025 guidelines from Wounds Canada; added new table outlining characteristics of an ideal dressing; added new comprehensive table on protective dressings, including 12 types of dressings with examples, materials, characteristics, uses, precautions and wear time.
- Polymyalgia Rheumatica and Giant-Cell Arteritis: Expanded introductory information on epidemiology and course of illness, added Imaging Tests under Investigations; additional guidance on tapering corticosteroids and prevention of corticosteroid toxicity; new information on emerging/potential biologic therapies.
Minor updates
The following content has been reviewed to ensure that it is current:
- Viral Rhinitis (common cold): Similar to sinusitis (above), added new drug table for supportive/symptomatic treatment; added link to the new patient infographic created for flu, Common Cold and Influenza – What You Need to Know.
- Contraception: Natural Family Planning and Barrier Methods: This chapter is now the “home” for basic information on the menstrual cycle and other chapters (such as pregnancy and fertility testing) will link to here; new information on apps for contraception and fertility awareness.
- Teething: Added reference to new study that did not show an association between insomnia and teething.
- Common Anemias: Added new iron formulation.
- Routine Childhood Vaccinations: Annual update of available products.
- Parkinson Disease: Added information on continuous subcutaneous infusion option for levodopa.
- Chronic Kidney Disease: Routine review.
Drug monographs
The following drug monographs were recently added:
- Jornay PM: Central Nervous System Stimulant.
