CPhA Looks Forward to Working with Liberal Government to Improve Health of Canadians

October 22, 2015 (Ottawa): The Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) congratulates Prime Minister-designate Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada and looks forward to working with the new government to leverage the expertise of Canada’s 39,000 pharmacists in identifying practical and affordable solutions to our health care challenges.

Over the course of the election, CPhA was pleased to hear some of the health commitments that were made by the Liberal Party, in particular their pledge to improve access to prescription drugs in Canada, increase health care innovation and support childhood vaccinations. These issues all have significant  implications for community and hospital pharmacists and CPhA is committed to working with the new government to help make these commitments a reality.

“As the most accessible health provider in Canada, pharmacists are well placed to address some of the challenges related to sustainability, access, drug safety and quality of care,” said Carlo Berardi, Chair, Canadian Pharmacists Association. “Working on the front lines, pharmacists understand the needs of their patients and we want to ensure that they can continue to make a positive difference in the health and well-being of Canadians.”

During the election campaign, CPhA was a leading voice in calling upon all political parties to address the issue of gaps in drug coverage, the implementation of a national e-prescribing plan and the development of a strengthened National Immunization Strategy in their policy platforms. We are pleased that this new government is poised to tackle these challenges to ensure that Canadian pharmacists and other health care professionals are equipped with the tools to deliver more innovative, accessible and sustainable health care to all Canadians.
