CPhA brings together more than 70 IPGs for first in-person Alberta event

The Canadian Pharmacists Association’s (CPhA) IPG Mentorship and Integration Project team hosted its first Alberta in-person event for International Pharmacy Graduates (IPGs) on November 29 in Calgary, drawing more than 70 participants for a full day of learning, connection and practical support.

Co-hosted with Directions for Immigrants at Bow Valley College, the event brought together many of the key organizations that shape pharmacist licensure and practice in the province, including the Alberta College of Pharmacy, the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC) and the University of Alberta’s Certificate to Canadian Pharmacy Practice program.

Throughout the day, attendees took part in a series of sessions designed to clarify steps on the pathway to licensure and prepare IPGs for practice in Alberta. Presentations covered document evaluation, the PEBC exams, Structured Practical Training, direct patient care, effective communication and working with diverse patient populations.

Panelists lead the opening session, introducing IPGs to the key organizations involved in pharmacist licensure and practice in Alberta.

Pharmacy employers from across Alberta also joined as exhibitors, giving participants a chance to ask questions about workplace expectations, hiring considerations and early career opportunities. Many IPGs noted that this was the first time they had been able to engage directly with participating organizations all in one place, and said the opportunity for clear, face-to-face conversations offered a clearer picture of the licensure process.

Exhibitors were on hand to answer questions about hiring, workplace expectations, career pathways and more.

The event also created valuable opportunities for participants to connect with one another. Through networking, informal discussions and one-on-one exchanges, IPGs strengthened relationships that can support their progress and help them build confidence as they navigate the transition into Canadian pharmacy practice.

Dr. Tara Leslie from the University of Alberta leads one of several sessions she presented throughout the day, including presentations on direct patient care and the university’s Certificate to Canadian Pharmacy Practice (CCPP) program.

Mahmoud Suleiman, Deputy Registrar and Acting Registrar-Treasurer of The Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada, presents an overview of the PEBC Qualifying Examination and what candidates can expect.

The event reflects CPhA’s ongoing commitment to supporting internationally educated pharmacists by improving access to information, expanding mentorship opportunities and building stronger supports that help IPGs move into the workforce. CPhA extends its thanks to all speakers, partners and exhibitors who contributed their expertise and helped make the day a meaningful step forward for IPGs across Alberta.

About the IPG Mentorship and Integration (IPGMI) Project

A national initiative funded through the Government of Canada’s Foreign Credential Recognition Program, the IPGMI Project was launched by CPhA in 2024 to support unlicensed IPGs through mentorship, learning sessions and work placements. The project aims to help IPGs prepare for licensure and build stronger pathways into the Canadian pharmacy workforce.
