Canadian Pharmacists Association expresses concern with US drug importation development

January 5, 2024 (Ottawa): The Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) is concerned that today’s US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement to authorize Florida to import prescription drugs from Canada could have a negative impact on Canada’s drug supply.

The Government of Canada has repeatedly stated that it will take all measures necessary to protect the drug supply for Canadians. While we are confident that Canada has already put in place strong measures to help restrict the mass exportation of drugs to the US, we also need to review them in light of today’s development to ensure no loopholes are exploited.

Canadians have experienced significant drug shortages in recent years and any attempts to import drugs from Canada could further exacerbate our already fragile drug supply. While this is a concerning development, CPhA wants to reassure Canadians that there is no immediate threat to our drug supply.
