Alex Tang

Alex Tang is a lecturer at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of British Columbia, where he is also lead for Non-Direct Patient Care (NDPC) in the Office of Experiential Education. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree in 2014 from the University of British Columbia and later obtained his Certificate in Travel Health in 2016. In 2024, he obtained his Master of Education degree from the University of Ottawa.

As a liaison between NDPC pharmacy practice stakeholders and the Faculty, Tang is responsible for building and sustaining capacity for the NDPC practicum opportunities for the Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy program.

Prior to joining the faculty in 2018, he practiced in the outpatient setting as a pharmacy manager on the Sunshine Coast and in the Lower Mainland, where he served as a practice educator for undergraduate student practicums and as a mentor to secondary school students. His current academic endeavours include creating practicum opportunities for students in non-traditional practice settings, and co-leading the PrideRx initiative, which aims to create one of Canada’s first SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression)-inclusive pharmacy curriculum.

Tristan Lai

Tristan Lai graduated from the University of Alberta in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy, then received additional prescribing authorization from the Alberta College of Pharmacy in 2017. Tristan is a lecturer at the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences where he oversees the community service-learning program in the Entry-to-Practice PharmD program and the experiential program in the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program. As a practicing pharmacist, Tristan is experienced in working alongside underserved communities to address their health needs. He was awarded the Bowl of Hygeia in 2019 by the Alberta College of Pharmacy and the Alberta Pharmacists’ Association, in recognition of his outstanding record of community service.

Michael Fanous

medsEXPERT was founded as a service by and for queer guys going back over a decade while Michael was initially working at other clinics and pharmacies in the Village. None of them were LGBTQ+ owned or run, which was a big disappointment when the need for queer-competent care couldn’t be found in Canada’s largest city. It was clear what was missing from other pharmacies in the Village - queer leadership, real outreach and competent knowledge of LGBTQ+ health.

Combining their passion for equity and Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education to create the first community pharmacy was a dream come true! medsEXPERT was born out of HIV/AIDS activism, improving access to judgement-free testing, awareness, PrEP + PEP care, harm reduction and more.

When they’re not working, teaching, or volunteering, Michael can be found raising and spoiling Kobi, our client comfort specialist.
