

Advocacy win! Pharmacists now included in federal loan forgiveness
Effective December 31, 2025, pharmacists are now eligible for the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness program. This is a major advocacy win that will help strengthen rural and remote health care by supporting recruitment and retention of pharmacists in underserved communities.

Pharmacists to gain authority to therapeutically substitute controlled substances under new federal regulations
Pharmacists will soon have the authority to therapeutically substitute one controlled substance for another—where permitted by provincial or territorial regulation—following amendments to the Controlled Substances Regulations (CSR) published in the Canada Gazette, Part II in mid-December.

New in CPJ: The role of pharmacists in the management of patients with atrial fibrillation
Pharmacist-led interventions for atrial fibrillation include anticoagulation management services, medication therapy management and prescribing. This review showed that pharmacists improved time in therapeutic range and reduced major bleeding events and strokes, compared with usual care. Pharmacist care also increased appropriate prescription rates.

Registration and abstract submission are now open for the 84th FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences coming up from August 30 to September 2, 2026, in Montreal, QC. Submit your abstract by March 18 and register by June 3 to secure the early bird rate. CPERC 2026: Call for abstract submissions
The deadline for abstract submissions for the Canadian Pharmacy Education and Research Conference (CPERC) 2026 is January 31. Oral and poster abstracts may be submitted under four categories: pharmacy education initiatives; teaching and learning research or scholarship; pharmacy practice research; and pharmaceutical science. CPERC 2026 takes place in Edmonton, AB, June 16-19.
