Managing Editor, Canadian Pharmacists Journal (CPJ) – 1-year contract

The Canadian Pharmacists Journal (CPJ) is Canada’s oldest journal, premiering in 1868.  Published six times per year, CPJ features original research, commentaries, clinical practice guidelines and practice tools focused on advancing the practice of pharmacy in Canada.  The Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) is actively recruiting for a Managing Editor, Canadian Pharmacists Journal (CPJ) to join our Digital Solutions department.

This is a 1-year contract, with the possibility of extension or converting to permanent employment.
We are a fully remote workforce and are looking for someone who is able to be fully productive, efficient and effective in a remote environment.

Job Summary

The Managing Editor, CPJ is responsible for the overall editorial quality of the Canadian Pharmacists Journal (CPJ).  

Duties and Tasks

  • The Managing Editor, CPJ is responsible for, but not limited to:
  • Accepting or rejecting manuscripts, and assigning them to various issues of the journal
  • Substantive editing, copy editing and proofreading of accepted manuscripts for clinical and scientific content and accuracy; and for style, form and clarity, in accordance with the editorial policies and contributor submission guidelines of CPJ
  • Overseeing peer review of manuscripts and acting as administrator of the online submission and peer review system
  • Working closely with CPJ Editor-in-Chief to determine article review and acceptance
  • Directing and managing peer-review process
  • Planning, managing and implementing the copy and production schedules and copy flow
  • Serving as liaison with CPJ’s publisher, SAGE Publications, and their teams in California and India
  • Developing business relationships with advertising sales representatives
  • Performing final proofreading of CPJ article proofs and final issue layout
  • Performing quality assurance checks of online publication
  • Working with the SAGE team to produce digital issue of CPJ, and with Marketing to communicate and promote
  • Leading annual meeting of the Editorial Board: organizing logistics, drafting presentation materials, contributing to strategic direction, presenting yearly journal metrics and other related activities
  • Setting, reviewing and revising standards for editorial quality and format of CPJ through consultation with experts and knowledge of the current literature and conventions
  • Managing social media
  • Overseeing translation of clinical material and checking for quality
  • Choosing cover text and art in conjunction with CPhA designer and CPJ Editor-in-Chief
  • Reviewing any contracts pertaining to CPJ
  • Directing the PubMed indexing and PubMed Central archiving processes

Qualifications

Education

  • Completed BA or BSc
  • Certification by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences, Council of Science Editors or American Medical Writers’ Association would be an asset

Experience

  • Substantive years of progressive editorial experience in health or science publishing
  • Proven experience as managing editor or equivalent of a health- or science-related periodical, with exposure to online products and issues
  • Experience with online peer-review systems
  • Experience utilizing project management methodologies
  • Experience using workflow, collaboration and content management tools (e.g. Jira, MS Teams, etc).

Skills

  • Expert command of oral and written English in the context of medical/health/science literature; ability to communicate in French is an asset

Salary Range

  • $85 – $100,000
