CPhA calls for input from pharmacist community to create Choosing Wisely Canada recommendations
November 24, 2016 (Ottawa): The Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) is calling on the pharmacist community to provide input into the development of its Choosing Wisely Canada recommendations to help reduce unnecessary tests and treatments.
This past July CPhA announced its support of Choosing Wisely Canada and committed to producing profession-specific tools to the overall Choosing Wisely Canada campaign.
CPhA will join more than 40 Canadian medical professional societies who have published over 180 recommendations or “lists” of tests and treatments that are overused with a goal of improving the quality of care delivered to Canadians. The lists are meant to spur conversation about what is appropriate and necessary treatment.
“In order to develop our list of pharmacy-specific recommendations, CPhA is reaching out to pharmacists and researchers from across Canada whose clinical experience has provided insight into unnecessary treatments and the negative effects they may have on patients,” said Phil Emberley, Director of Professional Affairs.
Through its submission process launched this week, CPhA is calling for pharmacists and researchers to submit their recommendations, rationale and evidence before February 1, 2017. An expert committee will be formed to review all recommendations before the list is finalized and submitted to Choosing Wisely Canada.
Choosing Wisely Canada is a campaign, established in 2014, to help clinicians and patients engage in conversations about unnecessary tests and treatments and make smart and effective choices to ensure high-quality care.
Over its 107 year history, CPhA has played a leading role in many initiatives to improve the safety and efficiency of the health care delivered to Canadians. Through improving assessment tools and prescribing guidelines, pharmacy practice advancement and training, and increased patient education and public awareness, CPhA is committed to supporting and enhancing clinical decision-making that prioritizes patient needs and health outcomes.
