CPhA presentation on PIPEDA review, Dec 2006
As of January 1, 2004 pharmacists in Canada must comply with the new privacy laws, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). This act (passed in 2000) governs the collection, use and disclosure of health information by health care providers such as pharmacists.
CPhA has developed a privacy code for pharmacists. The Code follows the ten standards established by the Canadian Standards Association's Model Code for the Protection of Personal Information, a central component of PIPEDA. The Code is also based on the Principles for the Privacy Protection of Personal Health Information in Canada (2000) developed by the Privacy Working Group which was chaired by CPhA.
