QUIT-X: A new smoking cessation strategy for pharmacists

CPhA is pleased to announce that is has been awarded funding from the Health Canada Federal Tobacco Control Strategy to fund Quit Using and Inhaling Tobacco - eXpanded, or "QUIT-X", a new smoking cessation strategy for pharmacists. This funding will cover the delivery of nine live QUIT workshops across the country, technical enhancements to the QUIT online learning platform, a pilot coaching program for QUIT learners, and a consumer/patient awareness strategy about the pharmacist’s role in smoking cessation!

Pharmacists are ideally positioned to help their patients quit smoking. On average, Canadians visit a pharmacy once a month, and interact with a pharmacist 70% of the time. Pharmacists have an important role to play in educating their patients about the effects of smoking on their health, encouraging them to quit, and working with them through the process.

Quit Using and Inhaling Tobacco - QUIT is a continuing education program that trains pharmacists to expand their role in patient care and offer smoking cessation services in their pharmacy. Enhanced and re-accredited in 2009, this program covers the following topics:

  1. Cessation principles
  2. Addiction and its implications
  3. Pharmacotherapy and behaviour
  4. Counselling process
  5. Creating a smoking cessation program in your pharmacy

All content in the QUIT program was peer reviewed by pharmacists and addiction management experts. Participants also receive a number of tools to use in their practice including assessment forms, diaries, and follow-up questionnaires.
