CPhA Takes Action: Task Force on a Blueprint for Pharmacy

David Hill David Hill, Executive Director of the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs, earned his degree in pharmacy and masters degrees in clinical pharmacy and business administration from the University of British Columbia. Dr. Hill earned his doctor of education degree in educational leadership from Brigham Young University and is a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists. Dr. Hill has been active in many academic, professional and voluntary organizations and has served on the boards of the BC Pharmacy Association, BC Lung Association, Canadian Hospital Pharmacy Residency Board, Canadian Council for the Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs, Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada, the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada and the CSHP Board of Fellows.
Mary Bozoian Mary Bozoian is a member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Association of Pharmacy Technicians (CAPT) in the capacity of Director of Administration. Currently employed as Senior Drug Claims Analyst for the Investigative Services Unit of Manulife Financial Group Benefits, Ms. Bozoian holds the designation of Certified Pharmacy Technician. Prior to joining Manulife in 1995, Ms. Bozoian worked as a pharmacy technician in retail pharmacy and at the Central Registry department at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener-Waterloo.
W. Gary Cavanagh W. Gary Cavanagh is a graduate of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Manitoba, and the Vice-President of the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada. Mr. Cavanagh has spent the past 35 years working as a pharmacist in community, government hospital and regional health authority settings. The boards of the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association, Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists, Manitoba Branch, and Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada have benefited from his continued involvement in the past 15 years. Mr. Cavanagh has also served as Chair, Provincial Psychiatric Institution Drug Purchasing/Utilization Program; Facilitator, Provincial Community Mental Health Psychopharmacology Module; and Member, Province of Manitoba Health Information Privacy Committee.
Lisa Dolovich Lisa Dolovich is a scientist at the Centre for Evaluation of Medicines and an Ambulatory Care Pharmacotherapy Specialist with the pharmacy department at St Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Dolovich obtained her bachelor of science degree in pharmacy and her doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Toronto, and her master of science degree in health research methodology from McMaster University. She is also an Associate Professor and Interim Research Director in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University. Dr. Dolovich leads a research program associated with over 100 research studies and has recently co-led a large demonstration project examining pharmacist integration into family practice called IMPACT.
Greg Eberhart Greg Eberhart, Registrar of the Alberta Pharmaceutical Association and its successor, the Alberta College of Pharmacists, is a graduate of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Alberta. Mr. Eberhart practised in both independent and corporately owned community pharmacies for over 10 years. Highlights of his career include the inception of the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA), the development of Alberta’s Pharmacy Information Network and Electronic Health Record, and achieving an expanded scope of practice for pharmacists that formally recognizes the full spectrum of pharmacists’ knowledge and skills, positioning Alberta pharmacists as care providers—not simply dispensers of medications.
Omolayo Famuyide Omolayo Famuyide, is the President-Elect of the Canadian Association of Pharmacy Students and Interns (CAPSI) and a third year pharmacy student at the University of Manitoba. Ms. Famuyide completed a bachelor of science degree at the University of Manitoba and currently serves on the National Advisory Committee for Moving Forward: Pharmacy Human Resources for the Future. Ms. Famuyide has been involved with the United Way of Winnipeg for the past six years as both a council member and co-chair for the Shaw United Way Youth Connections Council. She currently serves on the Community Investment Committee, and is an Agency Liaison Volunteer.
Reza Farmand Reza Farmand is the Director of Pharmacy for Costco Wholesale in Canada. Mr. Farmand is a graduate of Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Tehran. He has practiced community pharmacy in Ontario in various capacities since 1985. Mr. Farmand is involved in many facets of the profession, has been active in pharmacy advocacy associations from both the professional and business prospective and is currently a board member of the Canadian Association of Chain Drug Stores (CACDS). He has particular interest in continuing professional development and lifelong learning.
Dennis Gorecki Dennis Gorecki, Dean of the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, University of Saskatchewan received both his bachelor of science in pharmacy and doctor of pharmacy degrees at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Gorecki has served in other leadership roles, including President of the Association of Deans of Pharmacy of Canada (ADPC), Chairperson of the Health Sciences Deans’ Committee (University of Saskatchewan) and President of The Canadian Council for the Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs. Dr. Gorecki is currently serving as ADPC representative on the Management and National Advisory Committees of the Moving Forward: Pharmacy Human Resources for the Future sector study.
Erica Gregory Erica Gregory, has been a community pharmacist for over 20 years. Since 2004, she has been the BC Director on the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) Board and is presently on the NAPRA Executive Committee. Ms. Gregory has been involved in many activities that enhance the pharmacy profession, including: President of the College of Pharmacists of BC from 2000-2003, a Director on the Board of Examiners, a member of the Quality Assurance Task Force in BC, co-chair of the Continuing Assessment, Reflection, and Enhancement Program (RxCare Program), and is involved in the creation and continuing refinements of the Professional Development and Assessment Program (PDAP).
Allan Malek Allan Malek is Vice President, Professional Affairs for the Ontario Pharmacists Association. Mr. Malek is a licensed pharmacist in Ontario, and has worked progressively as staff pharmacist, pharmacy manager, and owner in both independent and chain pharmacies, as well as within the industry as Pharmacy Programs Manager for a major pharmaceutical company, and most recently as the Vice President of Pharmacy at the CACDS. He maintains affiliations with various provincial, national and international pharmacists' associations and holds his bachelor of science in biology degree from the University of Ottawa and his bachelor of science in pharmacy degree from Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.
Warren Meek Warren Meek has practiced pharmacy in a community setting for almost 30 years and has been intimately involved with the Pharmacy Association of Nova Scotia. Mr. Meek currently serves on a provincial program—Cardiovascular Health Nova Scotia, is on the steering committee for a Community Cardiovascular Hearts in Motion program and ICONS Network— Improving Cardiovascular Outcomes in Nova Scotia, and serves on the executive of the Community Pharmacy Section of the International Pharmaceutical Federation. Mr. Meek and the staff in his pharmacy have also participated in projects with Dalhousie University and Capital District Health searching for better implementation of pharmaceutical care.
Kamran Nisar Kamran Nisar, President of the Pharmacy Association of Nova Scotia and District Manager of Professional Services for Wal-Mart, graduated from the University of Toronto with a bachelor of science degree and completed his pharmacy degree at the School of Pharmacy at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Mr. Nisar started community practice at Pharmasave in Meteghan, a small seaside community in rural Nova Scotia with a population of about 1000. Mr. Nisar is heavily involved with the continuing education of pharmacists, first as the Continuing Education Coordinator for Nova Scotia Pharmacists in Zone 3 and now as an assessor for PEBC’s Objective Structured Clinical Examination.
Myrella Roy Myrella Roy, Executive Director of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists, holds a bachelor of science degree in Pharmacy and a diploma in hospital pharmacy from the University of Montreal and a doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Roy is a clinical pharmacist, manager, teacher and consultant. She has worked at the Ottawa Hospital where she managed the pharmacists and the clinical pharmacy services. Dr. Roy has also held faculty positions at the University of Montreal, Laval University and Claude Bernard University in Lyon, France and has served as a volunteer with Pharmacists without Borders in Albania. She was the founding President of the Canadian College of Clinical Pharmacy.
Theresa J. Schindel Theresa J. Schindel is the Director of Outreach Education at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Alberta and a member of the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada. She has a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the University of Saskatchewan, a fellowship with the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists, and a master of continuing education degree from the University of Calgary. Ms. Schindel is active in the profession, serving on various committees for the University of Alberta, Canadian Association for University Continuing Education, Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists and as a member of the Editorial Board of the Canadian Pharmacists Journal.
Margaret Ustupski Margaret Ustupski is a community pharmacist at Henders Pharmachoice Drugs in Estevan, Saskatchewan. A graduate of the College of Pharmacy of the University of Saskatchewan, Ms. Ustupski is the past chair of the Representative Board of Saskatchewan Pharmacists (RBSP) and is currently on the professional practice committee for the RBSP. Ms. Ustupski was involved in the Pharmaceutical Information Program (PIP), recently implemented in Saskatchewan, and brings that experience to the task force. Her interest in the Blueprint began at the June 2006 meeting.
Régis Vaillancourt Régis Vaillancourt is the Director of Pharmacy at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and maintains clinical practice in a community pharmacy and at Ottawa’s pediatric Palliative Care Hospice. He received his bachelor of pharmacy degree from the University of Laval, his hospital pharmacy residency certificate and his doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Toronto. Dr. Vaillancourt has worked with the Ontario College of Pharmacists and l'Ordre des pharmaciens du Quebec, and has served as a board member for the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities. Dr. Vaillancourt is currently the president of the Military and Emergency Pharmacy section of the International Pharmaceutical Federation, and the Past-President of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists.
Régis Vaillancourt Denis Villeneuve has been the Québec elected board member to the Canadian Pharmacists Association since 2004. For the past 20 years, Mr. Villeneuve has been a pharmacist and co-owner of two community pharmacies in Québec City. He is a consultant and an expert in marketing strategies, information technology and pharmaceutical training programs. Mr. Villeneuve is founder and President of Panacée Conseil Inc., a consulting company promoting the pharmacist’s role in healthcare. He is active in his community with HIV prevention groups, smoking cessation programs and amateur athletics, and is either a member of or is actively involved in several professional associations including the OPQ, AQPP, CPhA, and APhA.
Arthur Whetstone Arthur Whetstone is the Executive Director of the Canadian Council on Continuing Education in Pharmacy (CCCEP). He holds a doctor of education degree in vocational, technical, occupational education from Nova Southeastern University and a master degree in political studies from the University of Saskatchewan. His previous work experience includes 18 years as the president of a community college in Saskatchewan. Dr. Whetstone has served on the boards of the Saskatchewan and Canadian Chambers of Commerce, the Southeast Education Foundation, Junior Achievement, Dr. Margaret Savage Women’s Crisis Centre and was a member of the Premiers Advisory Committee on the Economy and the Colleges Serving Rural Communities Committee.
Deanna Williams Deanna Williams, Registrar of the Ontario College of Pharmacists, graduated with her bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto, and received her designation as a Certified Association Executive (CAE) from the Canadian Society of Association Executives. Her breadth of experience includes 20 years of active practise in both hospital and community pharmacy settings, policy work within the Ontario government’s Ministry of Health and more than a decade in association management with the Ontario College of Pharmacists. Ms. Williams is currently the President of the Federation of Health Regulatory Colleges of Ontario (FHRCO) for 2006-2007.
Janet Cooper Janet Cooper is the Senior Director, Professional Affairs for the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA). Ms. Cooper obtained her bachelor of science degree in pharmacy and Hospital Pharmacy Residency Certificate from Dalhousie University. She practiced for 12 years in hospitals in Halifax, Mississauga and Ottawa before joining CPhA in 1993. CPhA’s Professional Affairs department is responsible for the association’s initiatives in the areas of pharmacy practice development, continuing education, practice research, policy development, interdisciplinary collaboration, pharmacy human resources and health informatics. Ms. Cooper played a lead role in developing e-Therapeutics and facilitating partnerships with stakeholders, and has also been leading the Blueprint initiative for CPhA.
Marie-Anik Gagné Marie-Anik Gagné is the Director, Policy and Research for the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA). Dr. Gagné obtained her bachelor of arts honours degree in political science and sociology and her master of arts degree in sociology from the University of Ottawa, as well as her doctor of philosophy degree in medical sociology from McGill followed by post-doctoral studies at the University of Toronto in the Mental Health Systems Research and Development Program. Dr. Gagné gained experience managing and working with large national and regional committees, most recently as the program manager for the Canadian Collaborative Mental Health Initiative, the coordinator of the Central East Mental Health Implementation Task Force, and senior planner for the Durham HKPR District Health Council.
