CPhA Takes Action: Health Informatics

CPhA is recognized as Canada's leader in pharmacy health informatics. CPhA is positioning pharmacists with respect to e-health issues (e.g, e‑prescribing, sharing of clinical information, electronic health records). CPhA's e‑communication standard is used to adjudicate more than 300 million prescriptions each year. The migration of CPhA's e‑claims standard to the National e‑Claims Standard (NeCST) initiative has kept pharmacists at the forefront of development in integrated health information systems.

Canada Health Infoway is leading the development of a national Electronic Health Record (EHR) in collaboration with federal and provincial/territorial governments to facilitate improved health information access and transmission. Several projects are underway across Canada to develop Pharmacy Information Networks or Drug Information Systems (DIS). These projects will create interoperable systems that will carry all data related to a patient’s medication history: prescribed and dispensed drugs; allergies; ongoing drug treatment, etc., in order to ensure patient safety. CPhA is working with Canada Health Infoway and other stakeholders to represent the interests of pharmacists in the development of these new health information systems.
